We are excited to share that Amanda was featured in the Instructors Spotlight at Move It Or Lose It this month. You can read her interview here:
Instructors Spotlight - Move It Or Lose It This month we had a catch up with one of our instructors, Amanda Abbott, who runs her classes at various locations in Lincolnshire. We asked Amanda a few questions and here's what she had to say. How did you find out about the FABS course? I saw an ad on Facebook. What did you do before becoming a Move it or Lose it instructor? I'm a level three personal trainer and hold Level 3 Designing Exercise Programmes for the Senior Population too, so I did personal training and a couple of "chairobics" classes. What made you want to do the FABS course? It seemed like the natural progression from the courses I'd already done. What do you love most about being an instructor? Seeing people improve. Seeing their faces when something 'goes right'. Have you had any funny moments in your classes? So many! Once doing the pass the baton around the circle game, I had left my bag of spare batons behind a gentleman (the group joker!). Every time I called 'stop' to get the group to do a move in between the passing there seemed to be an extra baton! Then there were two extra batons. Every time there were more and more batons in the circle. The gentleman in question kept dipping into the bag of spares and adding them into the circle. It took me quite a while to work out what was happening. Meanwhile a few in the circle had worked it out or had seen the extra batons being added. I couldn't believe I was so slow to pick up on what was happening. We had a great laugh that day! What's your favourite music track to use in a class? I don't really have a favourite. I plan my routines to last for around 6 weeks. Every routine has a bit of a theme, so at the moment I'm doing Autumn/Halloween. Amongst the tracks being used at the moment we've got Time Warp and Thriller for the aerobic section; Ghost Town by The Specials for the strength section and Autumn Leaves for the cool down. I like a good box step to the right music as you can really get into the beat - my groups like it too! What would you say to anyone thinking about doing the FABS course and becoming an instructor? Be prepared for a lot of hard work, working out playlists and routines are very time consuming. But the sense of achievement when you deliver a good routine; when the group all works together in unison; the smiles on the clients faces and the laughter make this a very rewarding occupation. What are your hobbies? Open water swimming, cycling (road and off-road), taekwondo. gardening, baking and sewing. What is your favourite food? Any recipe with lamb! What is your favourite TV programme? Tricky this - I always forget when dramas are on so I'll watch one episdoe then forget it's on. I'm not good with catch-up tv. The Great British Sewing Bee and Great British Bake Off are my 'must see' programmes though. What is your guilty pleasure? I love going for long walks with my dog (Cocker Spaniel called Bailey) and will organise my weekly schedule so that I have one afternoon a week to go for a lovely long walk in the local countryside.

At last things are beginning to look a bit brighter and we can tentatively start meeting up with our friends and family. This also means we can start to welcome everyone back to our wonderful Move It Or Lose It classes! What better way to enjoy exercise than with friendly faces followed by a chat and a cuppa? * Not Just an Exercise Class We all know how much Amanda loves exercise but it’s not just the physical aspect of the class, it’s also about the social side and the positive impact that has on our wellbeing. The past year has been tough, especially for those who live alone or who have had to shield and that’s what makes classes like our MIOLI class so important. Having a reason to come out, meet with friends and have a bit of a giggle has huge benefits. Couple that with a bit of light exercise and you’ve got the perfect remedy. At MIOLI a combination of seated exercises, group exercises, lots of props and of course fun and laughter will help improve mobility and flexibility. There is growing evidence that regular exercise can also help protect us from developing dementia. To really lift the spirits we all enjoy a good sing along at MIOLI, it’s lots of fun and it can even help with stress and anxiety. Get Back Into the Groove! Starting up exercise again can seem daunting, especially after such a long time away. There’s no need to worry, Amanda will ensure that the MIOLI class will ease you back in slowly and as always all the exercises can be adapted to suit your particular needs. Most importantly, MIOLI classes are all about joining in and having fun. Come along to your local class, meet up with friends old and new and get moving! Classes:
The following Move It Or Lose It classes are currently running:
*Please note: Due to Covid Move It Or Lose It classes are not resuming at Tallington, Empingham, Baston and Corby Glen. You are free to join one of our other classes but it is important to book your place. After the longest winter spring is finally here and hopefully the changing season is bringing some positive news for our Move It Or Lose It classes! With the Government announcing a Road Map to the lifting of restrictions comes the long awaited news for the possible reopening of our exercise classes on 17th May.
Amanda can’t wait to welcome you all back to class and to help keep you all busy and active in the meantime she has sent out some special sunflower seeds for you to plant and nurture over the next two months. This special variety of sunflower are called ‘Sunspot’ and after planting they take 60 days to flower, just in time for classes to restart! So as a little MIOLO challenge, Amanda would like everyone to plant their seeds and share pictures of their progress and as the flowers grow the number of days left to class goes down! Health Benefits of Gardening Being out in the fresh air has many positive health benefits, especially for our emotional well-being. The past year has had many negative effects on our health but a recent report found that gardening had helped many of us through the tough times. Even small window boxes or balconies can have a positive impact on health and well-being by helping to reduce stress and anxiety. Gardening is a great physical activity too, providing an excellent strength and cardiovascular workout. If you have limited mobility you could try a little light hand-weeding or pruning and make sure you’re using the right tools for the job. Try to enjoy the time outside and don’t be tempted to do too much at once, just stick to one job at a time to help reduce the risk of injury. Happy gardening and be sure to send pictures of your sunflowers as they grow to amanda@smart-fitt.fitness or share them on social media, don't forget to tag us in the post (Facebook or Instagram). Amanda can't wait to welcome you all back to Move It Or Lose It soon! |
